Frederick Hughes Obituary

SERVICE UPDATE

Fred Hughes, 84, of West Yarmouth, Mass., passed away on December 31, 2025 at 10:26 AM of natural causes.

Fred was born in Belmont, Mass., in 1941 to Norman and Eleanor Hughes. As a young boy, he loved fishing, hiking and most of all his sisters, Betsy and Patsy. Fred attended Manter Hall in Cambridge before attending the University of Virginia where he received his Bachelor’s degree.

Upon graduation, Fred began work at the Harvard Business School’s Operations Support Services department where he remained until his retirement after nearly 50 years.

There was no kinder, gentler person on our planet than Fred. He saw only the good in everyone he met and everyone he met was taken by his positive outlook on life.

Fred was an avid fisherman -- pulling the largest brown trout out of Walden Pond ever recorded -- gardener and lover of music, particularly Gilbert & Sullivan.

A memorial service for Fred has been scheduled on Friday, March 27, 2026 at 10 a.m. at Christ Church in Cambridge, located at 0 Garden St.  Donations to either the Mass Audubon Society (massaudubon.org) or Trout Unlimited (tu.org) in Fred’s name would be greatly appreciated.
